AUTHORITY-BASED APPROACHES

Perth and Kinross Science 5-14

TWO Teacher Schools OR SCHOOLS WITH MULTI-STAGE COMPOSITE CLASSES

Teacher’s Notes - The units of work

The units of work have been compiled by grouping lesson plans from P1-4 and P5-7 - addressing all targets from levels A-F included in the highland science 5-14 primary programme.

The primary 1-4 units contain all targets from levels A and B and four targets from level C.

The primary 5-7 units contain the remaining level C targets and all those targets from levels D, E and F included in the primary programme.

This split is based upon the following expectations of pupils from the Revised 5-14 National Guidelines:

Level B should be attainable by some pupils in P3 or even earlier but certainly by most in P4.

Level C should be attainable in the course of P4-6 by most pupils

There are 10 units for P1-4, as follows:

Earth and Space

  • Unit 1      Materials from Earth

  • Unit 2      Day and Night, Summer and Winter

  • Unit 3      Water

Energy and Forces

  • Unit 1      Energy

  • Unit 2      Electricity

  • Unit 3      Forces

Living Things and the Processes of Life

  • Unit 1      Myself

  • Unit 2      Plants

  • Unit 3      Animals

  • Unit 4      Vertebrates and Invertebrates

There are 15 Units for P5-7, as follows:

Earth and Space

  • Unit 1      Changing Materials

  • Unit 2      Solids, Liquids and Gases

  • Unit 3      The Solar System

  • Unit 4      Space

  • Unit 5      The Structure of the Earth

Attainment Outcome: Energy and Forces

  • Unit 1      Light

  • Unit 2      Sound

  • Unit 3      Electricity

  • Unit 4      Energy Sources

  • Unit 5      Weight

  • Unit 6      Friction and Resistance

Living Things and the Processes of Life

  • Unit 1      Living on Earth

  • Unit 2      In Our Environment

  • Unit 3      The Human Body

  • Unit 4      ‘Living and Growing’

Suggested uses of the units in multi-stage composite classes

The P1-4 and P5-7 units can easily be used in the science programme of schools with multi-stage composites classes.  Included here are some suggestions for use in the following :-

Four classes       P1/2, P3/4, P5/6 and P7
