The Units of Work

Science units have been compiled by grouping related targets.

There are :-

  • 3 units in each year for P1 to P5

  • 5 units for P6

  • 6 units for P7

Generally, each unit contains targets at two levels to allow for different abilities in the class and to ensure progression.

With composite classes, there are several options for delivering the Units :-

  • Using ability groups as in maths etc

  • Team teaching - e.g. for a  P3/4

One teacher is responsible for planning for and teaching P3 and one for planning for and teaching P4.

  • Team teaching - e.g. in a P3, P3/4, P4

The P3 teacher would prepare for and teach all P3’s, the P4 teacher would do likewise for P3/4.  This would have to be timetabled to ensure sufficient support for the class as numbers could be somewhat large.

  • A cyclic programme could be developed using the units compiled for two-teacher schools or schools with multi–stage composites e.g.

Two year cyclic programmes for all P1’s and 2’s, one for all P3’s and 4’s and a 3 year cyclic programme for P5/6/7.

A P1 programme, a two year cyclic programme for all P2’s and 3’s, a two year programme for all P4’s and 5’s and a two year programme for all P6’s and 7’s

There are many different ways of organising this, depending on the individual school.  Some examples of this are given in the teachers’ notes for two teacher schools.

If this option were used, each CT would be responsible for the delivery of science to his/her own class.
