ES-D2.4 Describe how soils are formed
Soil is formed by the weathering of rock and contains both living and non-living materials.
The main soil constituents are clay, sand and humus.
Humus comprises the broken down remains of living organisms mostly of plant origin.
Soils contain varying amounts of water and air.
Good soil is important for the healthy growth of plants and therefore for food.

1 Examine samples of different types of soils - observe and record differences in texture, colour, etc.
2 Measure the porosity of different soil samples.
3 Measure the water content of different soil samples.
