Give examples of magnets in every day use.
Things made from wood, paper, glass, rubber, cork etc. are not attracted to magnets.
Most metals are not attracted to magnets but iron, steel (which is mostly iron), nickel and cobalt are.
Materials which are attracted to magnets are called magnetic materials.
A magnet can attract metal through other materials like wood, card, paper, plastic, water and metals.

1 Play with magnets and talk about what makes them special.
2 Make a collection of magnets in everyday use e.g. door catches, fridge magnets.
3 Discuss attract / not attract.
4 The pupils could be given a selection of magnets and a variety of metallic and non-metallic materials. They should test the materials to find out if they are attracted to the magnets. Pupils could record their findings in a table.
It should be established that only certain metals are attracted to magnets and non metals are not attracted.
