EF-C3.3 Describe air resistance in terms of friction
A moving object has to push its way through air particles and as they rub against it they cause friction.
We call this air resistance.
Air resistance makes movement through air more difficult.

1 Revise friction.
2 Discuss with pupils the situations in which they have felt air pushing against them (when there is a wind, carrying an umbrella against the wind etc.)
3 Ask pupils to time their partner as they run a set distance with a closed umbrella held in front of their body. Repeat using an open umbrella. Which was the easier run? Can you explain why?
4 Make simple parachutes from various materials and discuss what happens to slow the fall.
5 Investigate the factors that influence the rate of fall of model parachutes.
