|
LT-C3.1 | Give examples of living things that are rare or extinct Some species have become extinct due to a changing environment while others have been eliminated by the activities of man. Some species are at risk at present due to a drastic reduction in their numbers i.e. endangered species. |
1 | Discuss the terms "Endangered Species" and "Extinct". |
2 | Ask pupils to bring in any information they can on endangered species. Make a display. Put the main reason for the reduction in the numbers of each species on the display. (Class / group activity) When enough information is available discuss ways in which each species could be helped. These should include captive breeding programmes, conservation areas, nature reserves, zoos, seed banks, rare breed societies etc. OR Group research on an endangered species e.g. Siberian Tiger, Giant Panda, or an extinct species e.g. passenger pigeon, Woolly Mammoth, one of the dinosaurs, etc. Each group report to class. All reports to be displayed for class to study. |
