Teacher Demonstration Activity

This experiment will show that there is oxygen in the air we breathe.

Materials:

Shallow baking tins, Small candles, Identical large jam or pickle jars

Method:

  • Place a small amount of water in the bottom of each pan, enough to cover the bottom of each pan.

  • Light one of the candles and place it in the water on the bottom of one of the pans.

  • Cover the lit candle with the glass and observe what happens to the water.

  • Compare the results with the water level of the unlit candle.

Questions:

What do you notice about the water levels in the two jars?

Why do you think this has happened?

Why did we set up an unlit candle?
